A monoblock window is a great alternative to wall mounted models. It does not require complex construction work, after which a lot of garbage remains. You can install the air conditioner yourself without the help of specialists. The device is much cheaper than other models.
Advantages and disadvantages of a window air conditioner
Advantages of window monoblock:
- Low price.
- Easy installation. Installation does not require special qualifications and lengthy construction work: you need to remove the glass and insert the air conditioner into the window.
- The compact size allows you to place the product in any opening.
- The power of a window air conditioner can reach 8 kW, which is not inferior to expensive split-systems.
Cons of the device:
- Installation involves the replacement or alteration of the window. If there is a double-glazed window, only the first option is possible.
- Air conditioning is quite noisy. This drawback applies to older models. In modern devices, manufacturers have tried to solve this problem.
- Improper installation of a window air conditioner will result in heat loss in winter.
- The device must not be covered with curtains.
- If you stay close to the window device for a long time, you can catch a cold.
Window Air Conditioner Functions
In addition to air cooling, a window-type air conditioner performs additional functions:
- The built-in touch sensor and electronic control unit monitor the temperature and humidity in the room. Depending on the settings, the device turns on and off automatically.
- A special window in the grill provides a ventilation mode.
- Evaporators and condensers in devices are interchangeable.
- Air conditioners perform air purification.
- If the air temperature decreases on the street, the room heating mode is possible.
Principle of operation
Window air conditioning consists of a compressor and an evaporator in a metal casing. The front panel is plastic. It has blinds that control the direction of air flow, buttons and levers for control.
The principle of operation of the air conditioner is based on freon and refrigerant. The second is in a liquid state. With the help of a compressor, it is compressed and enters a device that raises the pressure. At room temperature, it enters the evaporator, where it boils, releasing cold. The airflow created by the fan draws in cool air and carries it indoors.
Freon circulates in a confined space, taking warm air and giving off cold.
Air conditioning transfers cool air from the street to the room. The temperature limit for operation is -30 degrees.
The device has air filters that trap small insects, dust, hair, and fluff.
Exploitation
For a window air conditioner to last for a long time, the rules for its operation should be observed:
- Do not cover the device with curtains or curtains, otherwise its operation will be limited only to this space and will not bring much coolness to the room.
- Observe the slope of the outside by 1-2 degrees, so that condensate is discharged normally.
- When installing the device, place the blinds on the outside of the wall.
- Do not install the air conditioner in places of high pollution and heat sources.
- Take out and wash the filters regularly, clean the housing.
- If there is a malfunction, contact a specialist, do not try to fix the breakdown yourself.
- Do not set temperature limits on the device.The air cools and heats up gradually. The temperature difference between the room and the environment should not be more than 7 degrees.
For long and uninterrupted operation of the device, it should be cleaned:
- Unplug the air conditioner.
- Remove the top panel.
- Pull out the main filter, rinse it under running water with a cleaning disinfectant.
- Wait until the filter is completely dry and replace it.
- Clean the front panel and the housing with a detergent and wipe with a cloth.
Cleaning is carried out 2 times a week. The external filter is cleaned once every seven days.
The heat exchanger inside is in need of maintenance once a year:
- Remove the top panel.
- Remove the filter.
- Clean the ribs with a vacuum cleaner or brush. The main thing is not to damage them so that the efficiency of the air conditioner does not decrease.
At temperatures below 10 degrees, only the ventilation mode is turned on. Some models are able to work in the cold season. This is indicated in the device specifications.
Selection options
Vented air conditioning should be purchased at specialized stores. Consultants will talk in detail about the models, show them in work. After the purchase, they will give a receipt and guarantee for the goods.
Choosing a product, do not focus only on price. In comparison with split systems, window monoblocks are quite cheap. The model of the most expensive brand is much lower in cost than wall-mounted air conditioners.
Pay attention to the power of the device. It is calculated on the square of the room. Also consider the size of the window into which the air conditioner will be inserted. Check the noise level at the store.
DIY window air conditioner installation
Installing a window air conditioner with your own hands does not require special skills. Tools required for installation:
- hammer drill;
- jigsaw;
- interchangeable drill chuck;
- hacksaws for metal and wood;
- a chisel for working with wood;
- Bulgarian;
- glass cutter;
- level;
- flat and inner corner;
- water based paint;
- brushes for painting;
- silicone sealant.
At the first stage, prepare a window opening. It should be at the edges more by 5-10 mm than the air conditioner itself. The distance between the ceiling and the device is not less than 20 centimeters. Position the appliance so that it is protected as much as possible from rain and snow. If there is no such place, you should build a visor that protects the air conditioner.
Monoblock can be mounted not only in the window, but also in a thin wall.
In order for condensate from the apparatus to drain normally, you should position its outer edge lower than the inside by about 10 millimeters. Fill any gaps between the window and the device with foam or sealant.
After installation, take care of the power supply. If the monoblock consumes less than 3 kW, an ordinary outlet is suitable. With more power, you will need to make wiring from the shield.
