Comprehensive optimization of technical devices from the point of view of modern knowledge in various fields of science has also affected the climate technology instruments. The desire to get away from a multi-block air conditioning system (split system) has been relevant since the advent of such equipment.
Why is monoblock relevant
For some time now, passing through any urban-type settlement, one is struck by the disgusting appearance of the facades of residential buildings. A huge crowd of unsystematically installed outdoor units of air conditioners is simply shocking and depressing.
Randomly mounted (Fig. 1) units, most often without any
coordination, reminiscent of a time when in the same way all the facades of houses and their roofs were dotted with television antennas.
It is terrible to think if these two time periods suddenly coincided.
At its core, air conditioners without an outdoor unit are ordinary split systems, but in a single internal case containing:
- heat exchanger;
- freon evaporator;
- compressor;
- fan;
- Filters
- drain pan (possibly a pump).
This design is one of the options for mobile air conditioners:

Such monoblock equipment is most relevant for its use in the premises of historic city centers, country houses and cottages, while renting various territories of buildings.
Principle of operation
The work of the monoblock is not much different from the work of a conventional split system. In the first heat exchanger, the refrigerant evaporates and condenses in the second. In the first case, it takes away heat from the outside air, cooling it. In the second, it condenses, heating the air that is thrown out.
The differences are only in its circulation. For this, 2 pipes are provided that exit through the wall to the street. Through these nozzles, which are closed on the street side with small decorative grilles (Fig. 3), air is drawn in and removed from the air conditioner. Lattices made of flexible plastic are installed without the use of external work.
Minimization of all nodes of the device made it possible not only to compactly place all its functional nodes, but also to give it an aesthetically attractive appearance. Unfortunately, this was not without its cost.
The circulation grilles facing the street, due to their minimal size and masking color, do not require any coordination. The advantages of such equipment are unconditional and obvious:
- from the side of the street, the presence of climatic equipment is imperceptible and does not require coordination;
- impeccably comfortable conditions are created in each individual room due to a change in the direction of air flow;
- extremely accurate attitude to the environment: the use of environmentally friendly refrigerant R410, high energy efficiency;
- simple and safe installation of equipment, without performing external work;
- high efficiency of air exchange due to the influx of outside air;
There is a significant drawback - similar, quite expensive, equipment can only work in one room. It is worth noting that the noise level, although insignificant, is higher than that of conventional split systems.
Tip: to put such appliances in all rooms is irrational. Unless, of course, the apartment is not one-room.
Selection and installation of air conditioners without external units
The decision to install a monoblock can be made for certain reasons related, for example:
- with a ban on the installation of an external unit of the split system, the city administrative commission or the commission of architrodnadzor;
- by design indicators, the pipeline trajectory is irrational;
- it is economically inexpedient to install stationary, climatic equipment in a rented room;
- there is no desire, most of the year, to see inoperative machinery;
- excessive complexity of installation (Fig. 2).
In this case, the use of wall-mounted air conditioners without external units will be a reasonable way out of this situation.
It will be a floor version of the fortochny model or a wall model with 2 nozzles, it will be necessary to decide based on the situation and personal preferences:
- in the first case, you have to sacrifice part of the window and a slightly damaged interior (Fig. 4);
- there will be a feeling of some discomfort from the presence of unusual equipment;
- in the second - to be ready to drill 2 holes in the outer wall of the room;
- change, albeit slightly, the sound background of the premises;
- you have to agree: with 2 hours of time spent installing an air conditioner, with comfortable conditions in a room with a pleasant temperature and normal humidity.
It remains to choose the power of the necessary equipment and the model with the desired options, depending on the budget.
The selection of power event rather traditional and widely known, depending on the dimensions of the living room.

Electronic options are diverse and functional. The most budget option is cooling only. Generated heat is removed through the condensate pipe to the street. This option differs from a conventional air conditioner in the place of air intake - from the street (at the device without an external unit) or from the room.
A heating option is also possible, as in a heat fan. Ceramic heating elements act as a heat carrier, since air oxygen is burned less.
In many monoblock models, electronics allows you to:
- control and management of the set parameters using the remote control;
- maintaining all set parameters in automatic mode;
- airflow control due to a multi-speed fan;
- changing its direction with the help of movable blinds;
- supervision of overflow of the condensate pan during intensive work of the equipment (automatic shutdown when it is overfilled);
- sidebar in central heating, in some models, creating a real climate center.
In all one-piece equipment pre-filters are pre-installed. They must be cleaned regularly, in accordance with the attached instructions. In elite models, there are fine filters (up to coal filters) that require regular replacement.
Tip: the inclusion of the maximum number of options will allow you to create a real elite node climate technology. In this case, the question of price disappears by itself. Budget models, with electromechanical control devices, are available even with a low level of income.
Installation of air conditioners without an external unit (monoblocks) is economically justified only if it is impossible to use conventional split systems. Such equipment loses to conventional systems, both in terms of efficiency and price.
It is also important that none of the leading brands of HVAC equipment is represented by monoblocks.
